Biography

Dr. Gerardo Leyva Gómez

Dr. Gerardo Leyva Gómez earned his master's and doctoral degrees in the Graduate Program in Chemical Sciences at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). He completed a research stay at the Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. From 2011 to 2017, he worked at the National Institute of Rehabilitation, Ministry of Health, developing new medications for wound healing. He currently serves as a Professor-Researcher in the Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Chemistry, UNAM.

Gerardo Leyva has received the main health distinctions in our country, including the CANIFARMA award four times, the UNAM Foundation Award for pharmaceutical innovation and health devices twice, the National Entrepreneur Award, the Santander Award for Business Innovation, the BLIS-UNAM Award, the Moisés Itzkowich-UNAM Foundation Alzheimer Award, the Dr. Jorge Rosenkranz Biotechnology Research Award, the Prof. Janusz M. Rosiak Award in radiation chemistry, and the National University Distinction Recognition for Young Academics, one of the highest awards of the UNAM, the Andrés Manuel del Río National Chemistry Award 2025, Scientific Research Category, Young Researcher Division, and in 2024 and 2025 he was recognized within the World’s Top 2% Scientists for his outstanding contribution to scientific advancement worldwide.

Dr. Gerardo Leyva has published over 170 peer-reviewed, internationally indexed articles and 8 book chapters. His work has been cited over 4,300 times in Scopus, and he serves on the editorial boards of five international journals. He has appeared in over 300 media outlets, including print, radio, and television, both nationally and internationally, and has received seven national research grants. He led the first multidisciplinary research group in Mexico focused on ichthyosis and rare diseases, and he has two pending national and international patent applications and one trademark registration. He heads the ITESM-UNAM consortium, an initiative that brings the two institutions together to develop industrial projects. He currently leads a research group dedicated to developing innovative medicines for emerging diseases affecting the Mexican population.
