Biography

Dra. Clarita Olvera Carranza

Dr. Olvera earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de  Nuevo León and her Doctorate in Biochemical Sciences from the Institute of  Biotechnology at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She is a Titular  Researcher B at the Institute of Biotechnology, within the Department of Cellular  Engineering and Biocatalysis. She leads the Laboratory of Biocompatible Polymers and  Nanobiotechnology, whose research focuses on the generation and study of  carbohydrate-active enzymes that synthesize polysaccharides with applications in the  food and pharmaceutical-medical fields.

She has published a total of 43 research articles in indexed international journals,  including high-impact publications in journals such as Carbohydrate Polymers, Journal of  Chemical Biology, Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Bacteriology, Applied and  Environmental Microbiology, and Glycobiology, among others. She is the author of  several book chapters, co-inventor of two patents, and has led and participated in the  development of technological solutions for various companies in the country’s food  industry.

She has mentored undergraduate and graduate students, having graduated 12  undergraduate students, 14 master’s students, and 4 doctoral students. Her research has  been supported by various funding sources, including PAPIIT-UNAM, CONACyT, and  bilateral international projects.

Dr. Olvera is a member of the National System of Researchers as a National Researcher  Level II and has been recognized with several awards, including the State Prize for  Science and Technology in 1992, the Alfredo Sánchez Marroquín Award in 2007 (as  advisor), granted by the Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, and the  State Merit Award in the area of Science Outreach and Liaison in 2013. She has also  been honored with several prestigious fellowships, including one awarded by the US  National Academy of Sciences.

Furthermore, she has served as a member of various evaluation committees for  international journals, foreign universities, and research funding agencies. She currently  collaborates with numerous national and international research groups.
